It's Time - Africian Women Join Hands Against Domestic Violence

Welcome to the official website of It's Time: African Women Join Hands Against Domestic Violence.

Joining Hands Against Domestic Violence is a unique project working to reform the justice systems and combat domestic violence in South Africa and Ethiopia. The project is a partnership between:

The Justice Education Society of BC
The South African National Prosecuting Authority
The Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association

The project has provided training materials and workshops for hundreds of justice system personnel in the two African countries. Funding is provided by the Canadian International Development Agency.

While working in South Africa and Ethiopia, the Justice Education Society produced a documentary titled It’s Time: African Women Join Hands Against Domestic Violence. Viewers are taken inside safe houses to hear personal stories from women and girls who have fled abuse. The men and women leading the campaign to end domestic violence describe their progress, the obstacles they face and the successes they have seen.

“This project was a mammoth and exhausting process that went far beyond my expectation. It is a product of an excellent combination of both the Canadian and our own South African expertise in the various areas of domestic violence.”

- Tsidi Kambula, Prosecutor, South African National Prosecuting Authority

"The more time you spend in Africa, the more you realize that the future of the country lies with the empowerment of women."

- Dr. Bill Fris, the former U.S. Senate majority leader
